Alaska - Into the wilderness cruise & land

Who else has Alaska at the top of their bucket list?

When I lived & worked in Canada, I booked so many Alaskan cruises for our customers, but never got the chance to experience it for myself.

So close...yet so far away. But, one day, I will get there!

A cruise is the ONLY way to really SEE Alaska close up.

When can you go? Between April and October, many cruise lines will visit this beautiful place, but typically, high season is between June & August, when the temperatures are much warmer.

Take a 7 night cruise from Vancouver, or Seattle along the inside passage to visit ports like Juneau, Hubbard Glacier, Whittier, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Sitka. From these quaint towns and cities, you can experience a helicopter ride and flight seeing, if you like that kind of thing! If like me you like your feet firmly on the ground, or ship, then maybe spotting humpback whales and orcas along your journey is more your ideal hobby? Or going shopping for those all-important gifts for friends & family.

But I think, if you are travelling so far, you should definitely invest in a cruise & land tour!

Take a one-way Gulf of Alaska itinerary up into Alaska, board the wilderness train, and stay in hotels in Denali and Anchorage for some amazing wildlife spotting; bears, moose, and wolves, are just a few. Of course, you can do all this in reverse and end your holiday relaxing on the ship if you wish. All of this can be put together and packaged up for you.

The cruise line you choose will be personal to your holiday interests, how intimate you would like the cruise to be, and if you would like shore excursions included. If you want to be more at one with the scenery, I would definitely recommend a smaller ship.

For a real in-depth Alaskan experience, you could do a luxury expedition cruise, where you will be taken out on a zodiac or kayak, right unto the glaciers. You will also be taken further along the inside passage than any larger ship could get to.

But, regardless of cruise line, Alaska is one destination where I would definitely spring for a balcony. With sights like Tracy Arm Fjord and beautiful glaciers to look out for, you would not regret it!

This is my dream: Fly into Calgary, take the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff and Lake Louise to stay in the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel for a couple of nights, before continuing on my journey to Vancouver where I will embark on my Alaskan Cruise & land tour.
