From serenity...to craziness (possibly)

Do you feel calm? I feel strangely calm. Without the stresses of everyday life, rushing around like a headless chicken, just trying to keep up….Without all that, I am physically and mentally starting to relax.

I, like so many others, am currently working at home. Looking out of the window into my back garden and beyond the fences, trying to draw in some inspiration to write this weeks blog.

I lucked out with the room I have as my office because, outside to the left of our garden, there is a public footpath and grass area. Every now and again, I look out to see beautiful dogs running back and forth, loving life, and totally oblivious to what’s going on in the world. A mother is out playing hide and seek with her little ones, trying to keep them occupied, knowing they will be at home for the next few months.

My husband has his office at the front of the house, where his view is another house. He is in paradise though, according to him, surrounded by his guitars. I personally prefer the outside world, but he isn’t a lover of the sun and heat.

It all feels a bit surreal and eerie. There are no, or hardly no planes in the sky, people are stepping aside to allow others to pass, standing metres apart when stopping for a gossip. Have you seen those pictures of London? The streets are so quiet and empty.

I haven’t been out for a walk with my pooch yet today (my husband took him this morning) but even the last few days there has noticeably been a lot less traffic on the roads, I guess with people self isolating, no work or no where to go, there is not much need to be using the car.

My dog, named Indiana (Indy for short) a mixed Labrador/Shepherd is 12 years old, and not as fast as he once was, bless him. But the last few days, I have actually enjoyed walking to his pace and just looking around me and appreciating what a beautiful place we live in. On Monday morning, some chalk drawings made by children on the pathways made me smile, so I took out my camera (phone) and spent some time taking pictures of things around me which also made me smile.

Will I feel like this in a week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks? Stay tuned in blogs to come as I am slowly driven up the wall by my teenagers ‘music’ from the next room, eating us out of house & home while continuing her college course online. It’s actually great they’re able to do that, with only 4 months to go until the end of the year.

My husband and I, although we’ve been happily married for almost 20 years, are now thrown in to the same workspace for possibly the next few weeks. He is also eating everything in sight and drinking coffee like it’s going out of fashion.

These are unprecedented times. There are no ships on our oceans. Yes, the travel industry is very quiet at the moment. I, as I’m sure other travel agents, are keeping busy by marketing and letting people know I am still here to talk, to discuss their plans, to book their cruises for summer, for winter or for next year. I am doing online cruise training, which I don’t normally have much time to do. I am writing this blog, and keeping my website and social media pages updated.

I’ll tell you what, I am missing my little shop, my place, where I can meet with and talk to my customers about their cruise plans. getting excited with them as they make their choice and want me to go ahead and make their booking. Still, after 29 years in this industry, I actually do get excited for people. Then I get a twinge of jealousy that I’m not going. Only joking. Well maybe just a little bit.

As a final note, walking at a slow dogs pace is lovely and all, but really, how much exercise am I getting? A big fat zero. Sitting in the house, eating everything I don’t usually have access to, is not really great for the waistline, if you know what I mean?
